(Although the LVGA supports the efforts of the tree street neighborhood organization, the organization is a separate group, acting independently of the LVGA.)

College cut-through traffic has been a major issue for residents living in the Pine, Lindy, Oak, Laurel and Holly Streets neighborhood, as well as Old Phalanx Road, since the mid- 1970’s, when Brookdale Community College turned what was then a service road into one of the two main entrances to their school. Since that time numerous efforts by a number of residents, a great many of whom have resided in this neighborhood since before Brookdale was built, have been made to regain the quiet, residential character of their neighborhood.

In 1977, a township ordinance was passed closing off two neighborhood streets to stop cut-through traffic. It was rescinded that same year due to a law suit filed by a local business owner and resident to have the barricades removed.

In the mid 1980’s, after another plea for help from residents, an ordinance was passed to prohibit left turns from Swimming River Rd between the hours of 7-10AM and right turns from Phalanx Road between the hours of 2-5PM. Signs were erected on both Swimming River and Phalanx Roads. In 2003 a 2 point penalty warning for those making the illegal turns was added to the signs. Although the signs have helped, cut-through traffic and speeding still occur at other times of the day.

Currently, neighbors from the tree streets are working with township officials to come up with a solution to this ongoing problem. Traffic calming measures that will be the least invasive for residents but will keep speeds down and cut-through traffic to a minimum are being researched. At this time modifications are being considered to Laurel and Holly at Phalanx Road and discussions between township officials and residents are on-going.
