Route 520:
2007

New CR520 Task Force Formed

A new CR520 Task Force, created by County Engineer, Joseph Ettore, began meeting in January 2007. In addition to Mr. Ettore, the Task Force included Mayor Scharfenberger and Committeeman Hall, representatives of both the County and Middletown Township planning, engineering and legal departments, local business owners, and several members of the LVGA Board of Directors. The purpose of the Task Force is to study what can be done to improve traffic conditions and pedestrian safety along Newman Springs Road from the GSP exit to the Brookdale Community College entrance and to make appropriate recommendations. In 2007 the Task Force focused its attention on the center of Lincroft from Hurleys Lane to the main intersection at CR50. Read more.

Brookdale Roundabout Opens

The long-awaited Brookdale roundabout officially opened on August 30, 2007 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Although many people were skeptical about the roundabout at first, the roundabout is now well accepted and is considered a definite improvement over the old light-controlled intersection. Read an Asbury Park Press article here and an Independent article here. The Monmouth County "In Focus" publication also had an article about the roundabout with an overhead photo. Mounmouth County also made a pamphlet, explaining how to navigate the roundabout.  The history of the roundabout is found here.

Police enforcement

The LVGA has continually asked the Middletown Police Department to enforce the speed limit on CR520. In the month following the tragic accident of November, 2006, we were very happy to see the Police Department actively enforcing the speed limit. However, that did not last long, as witnessed by a school bus driver who recently wrote two letters to the editor, published in the Independent. Referring to a CR520 school bus stop, Mr. Kenneth Hayes wrote, "Rarely do I discharge schoolchildren without a vehicle running through my school bus stop/red safety lights". (The full letter to the editor can be viewed here.)
